First Look at Conviction

ABC announced yesterday that Agent Carter will not be picked up for a third series. This awful news was fortunately followed by a more joyful one – Conviction, Hayley’s new drama TV show, has been picked-up for a whole first season! Check out a first look below:

A brilliant young attorney (Hayley Atwell), who is also the daughter of a former U.S. president, is blackmailed to head up LA’s new Conviction Integrity Unit. She and her team investigate cases where people may have been wrongly convicted.

Agent Carter canceled as ABC picks up Conviction

ABC has given a series order to Conviction, which stars Agent Carter’s Hayley Atwell, EW has learned. The network also simultaneously canceled Agent Carter, making it the Marvel’s first live-action series to be axed.

In the show, lawyer and former First Daughter Hayes Morrison (Atwell) is about to accept a job offer from her sexy nemesis, NY District Attorney Wayne Wallis, to avoid jail time for cocaine possession and avoid hurting her mother’s Senate campaign. Working with his team at the new Conviction Integrity Unit will let her use her brilliant mind to turn over cases where there is credible suspicion of wrongful conviction, and give her a chance to turn things around with her high-powered political family.

Conviction also stars Eddie Cahill, Shawn Ashmore, Merrin Dungey, Emily Kinney, Manny Montana, and Daniel DiTomasso. Liz Friedman will write and executive-produce with Mark Gordon, Nicholas Pepper, and Liz Friedlander.

Hayley Atwell To Star in ABC Drama Pilot ‘Conviction’

Hayley Atwell, star of ABC’s Marvel drama series Agent Carter, has been tapped as the lead of another ABC drama project, legal drama Conviction, where Atwell’s character coincidentally is also named Carter. (That will likely change.) The Mark Gordon Co. is producing with ABC Studios.

Agent Carter, now in its second cycle, is drawing pretty modest ratings and does not look likely for a Season 3 pickup. In case of a series order for Conviction and an improbable renewal of the Marvel drama, ABC sources indicate there is a scenario in which she could possibly do both shows, potentially both as limited runs. But Atwell’s casting as the lead of a new project by the same network and studio indicate that Agent Carter is probably going away, and they want to keep its star on its roster of leading ladies.

Co-created by Liz Friedman (Marvel’s Jessica Jones), who wrote the script, and Liz Friedlander (The Following), who will direct the pilot, Conviction tells the story of Carter Morrison (Atwell), the brilliant but ne’er-do-well daughter of a former President, who is blackmailed into taking a job as the head of Los Angeles’ newly created Conviction Integrity Unit. She, along with her team of lawyers, investigators and forensic experts, work together to examine cases where there’s credible suspicion that the wrong person may have been convicted of a crime.

Mark Gordon and Nick Pepper of The Mark Gordon Co., which is a lead studio on the project, also executive produce.
